Very nice zinc Panzer Pionier Ersatz und Ausbildungs Bataillon 5 related dog tag in used, but very good condition.
The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served in the Stamm-Kompanie Panzer Pionier Ersatz und Ausbildungs Bataillon 5. This bataillon was formed in late August 1939 in Ulm an der Donou as Pionier Ersatz Bataillon 5. In September the bataillon was renamed into Panzer Pionier Ersatz Bataillon 5. It trained and supplied soldiers for 11 different Pionier Bataillone, 3 different Panzer Pionier Bataillone and some other Pionier related units.
A Stammkompanie was a unit that trained the soldiers. (Often the soldiers of this kompanie were soldiers who had frontline experience, but no longer were fully usable at the front due to injuries or had a lot of combat experience that was used to train others). Of course this changed later in the war as there was a shortage of (front)soldiers.
Interesting and not often seen dog tag.
