Nice worn dog tag from a soldier who served in the Stamm Kompanie Grenadier Ersatz und Ausbildungs Bataillon 317.
The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows normal signs of wear. A well preserved ground find. The Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 317 was formed in September of 1939. In April 1943 the Ersatz and Ausbildungs bataillon became 1 bataillon called Grenadier Ersatz und Aubildungs Bataillon 317.
In late 1944 the bataillon became part of the 89.Infanterie-Division. This division was stationed in the Eifel area (Monschau). It participated in the Ardennes Offensive and in Januari 1945 it was stationed in Büllingen (Belgium) not far from Malmedy. In March 1945 the division was part of the 5.Panzerarmee which got destroyed in the Eifel. Remaining troops were added to the 326.Volks-Grenadier-Division and fought against Americans in Kassel.
The 'A' on both sides of the tag stands for the soldiers bloodtype.
