The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' which is a fieldmade example, shows overall signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier/NCO who served in the Stab III.Bataillon SS Infanterie Regiment 9. This regiment was formed in February 1940 from Totenkapf Standarte K. It took part in the invasion of Russia and later fought along side the 2.Gebirgs-Division. In December 1941 it moved to the area of Leningrad, but in August 1942 the regiment was disbanned. The Stab III.Bataillon was used to form the Stab II.Bataillon SS-Panzer Grenadier Regiment 5. This regiment was later entitled into SS-Panzer Grenadier Regiment 5 'Thule'. It was part of the 3.SS-Panzer-Divsion 'Totenkopf'.
