Very nice press photograph in very good condition of Unteroffizier Josef Karl.
The photograph shows overall normal signs of (storage) wear. It's complete with caption on the back. The moment the photo was taken Josef was Geschutzfuhrer of the 2.Kompanie Panzerjager Abteilung 49. This abteilung was part of the 4.Panzer-Division and was equipped with the Marder II/III.
Josef earned the Ritterkreuz for his bravery in August 1943. With his Self proppelled AT-Gun he destroyed 11 enemy tanks that brought his total on 20 destroyed enemy tanks.
In January Josef counterattacked a Soviet attack on his own initiative and pushed them back. For this he earned the Eichenlaub being the 397th soldier earning this. That same day he got wounded because his vihicle received a direct hit.
The size of the photograph is 13cm*18cm. Dated January 1944.
