Walter earned the Ritterkreuz on the 14 of June 1941 as the commander of IV.Bataillon Luftlande Sturm Regiment 1.
He earned the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold in December 1943 as commander of the II.Bataillon Fallschirmjäger Regiment 6 and he earned the Oakleaves in September 1944 as commander of Fallschirmjäger Regiment 11.
The photograph is complete with its caption on the back that reads,'Neueste Aufnahme den: Eichenlaubtragers Oberstleutnant Gericke. Regimentskommandeur eines Fallschirmjäger-Regiments'.
The photo was taken in the area of Bologna, Italy on the 16.12.1944. The size of the photograph is 12cm*18cm.
