The photograph shows overall normal signs of (storage) wear. It's complete with caption on the back. The moment the photograph was released Ludwig was Kommandeur I.Bataillon Grenadier Regiment 35. This regiment was part of the 25.Infanterie-Division.
Ludwig earned the Ritterkreuz on the 8th of October 1943. A very detailed report of his actions can be found online. He also earned the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold, EK2, EK1 and the Nahkampfspange in Bronze. Ludwig was killed in action on the 5th of July 1944 in the area of Beleja-Luscha (Russia).
