Death notice card of Schütze Josef Strebl who died of a car accident in Greece.
The notice shows overall normal signs of wear. According the notice Josef died on the 18th of June 1942 because of a car accident in Saloniki, Greece. Josef was a Schutze in a motor Abteilung of the Deutschen Afrikakorps, but we found out that Josef served in a Kompanie z.b.V. Sonderstaf 'F'.
In May 1941 Sonderstab F was formed under the command of General der Flieger Hellmuth Felmy. This unit was established as a special staff, known as Sonderstab F (the F stands for Felmy), for the purpose of making preparations for a military expedition into the Middle East and establishment of a military mission in Iraq. Sonderstab F came directly under OKW/Fuhrungsstab, Ausland/Abwehr (Armed Force High Command, Foreign and Counterintelligence Office) and operated from Athens, Greece, in close cooperation with the German Military Commander in Greece.
The Sonderstab F was part of the Sonderverband 288.
Josef was drafted in Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon z.b.V. Rheine which was formed in May 1941. It trained and supplied soldiers for Afrika-Regiment 361 which consisted out of Foreign Legionnaires.
