The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served in the 2.Schützen Ausbildungs Kompanie Ersatz Bataillon 999. This bataillon was formed in February 1943 and consisted out of criminals, deserters, prisoners etc. etc. Instead of putting them in jail, bataillons like these where formed during the war so that it prevended them from evading military action.
You can imagine that they had harsh training and once on the front they had to do all sort of dirty and dangerous tasks. Ersatz Bataillon 999 supplied soldiers for all 26 Festung Infanterie Bataillons.
A tag of this unit is much harder to come by then a Panzer, Fallschirmjäger or SS tag.
