Nice zinc Wehrmacht Penal Bataillon related tag in used, but good condition.
The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served in the 1.Kompanie Bau Pionier Bataillon IV/999. This bataillon was formed in July 1944 and part of the 1.Armee. It consisted out of criminals, deserters, prisoners etc. etc. Instead of putting them in jail, bataillons like these where formed during the war so that it prevended them from evading military action.
You can imagine that they had harsh training and once on the front they had to do all sort of dirty and dangerous tasks.
A tag of this unit is much harder to come by then a Panzer, Fallschirmjäger or SS tag.
The 'A' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
