The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who was drafted in the Pionier Ersatz Kompanie Infanterie Ersatz Regiment 31. This ersatz regiment was formed in late August 1939 in Braunschweig and trained and supplied soldiers for units within the 31.Infanterie-Division. In October 1942 the regiment was renamed into Reserve Ersatz Regiment 31 and was part of the 191.Reserve-Division which was stationed in Northern France. In November it was renamend into Reserve Grenadier Regiment 31 and operated in the area of Boulogne, France as coastal protection.
In January 1944 the regiment was used to form Grenadier Regiment 148 (mot) which was part of the 49.Infanterie-Division (former 191.Reserve-Division). It operated in the Paris area in the summer of 1944 and was destroyed in the Mons area. So after it was rebuild as a Kampfgruppe in the area of Maastricht, Holland. 
The 'O' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
