The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall signs of wear. It's broken, but complete and solid. It belonged to a soldier who served within the Fliegerhorst Kommandantur E Powunden which was situated north-east from Kaliningrad. This kommandantur E was formed in late August 1939. In March 1940 it was renamed into Fliegerhorst Kommandantur E 7/I and in June of that year it moved to, after the defeat of the Netherlands, airbase Gilze-Rijen. It operated in Gilze-Rijen until March 1945. It was renamed a couple of times during the rest of the war.
Unit active on this base were Nachtjagdgeschwader 2, Kampfgeschwader 30, Kampfgschwader 76 and some more.
