The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served in a company of Infanterie Regiment 183. This regiment was formed in late august 1939 and was part of the 62.Infanterie-Division. It was put into action during the invasion of Belgium and fight's way through to France. In June 1941 it participated in the invasion of Russia during Operation Barbarossa and fought in areas like Cholm, Kiev, Poltawa, Charkow, Don and Belgorod.
In October 1942 the regiment was renamed into Grenadier Regiment 183. At this time the regiment fought together with the 8.Italian Armee and was destroyed in Donbogen in late 1942. Newly formed in September 1944 as part of the 62.Volks-Grenadier-Division and put into action during the battle in the Ardennes.
The 'A' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.

Interesting is the 'DEUTSCHES REICHSHEER' that was stamped on the back of the tag, but was ereased. When the Reichsheer became the Wehrmacht the 'DEUTSCHES REICHSHEER' marking on the back of the erkennungsmarke was dropped. However, it was decided that the stocks of zinc erkennungsmarken should be used up.

On the back the soldier carved in his 'P.O.W.' number and 'B561128'
