Simon was hospitalized suffering from 2nd degree frost bite. After recovery he was transferred in July 1942 to Hochgebirgs Pionier Kompanie which was a speclialized high mountains Pioneers unit. The same month it was renamed into Hochgebirgsjäger Bataillon 2. In February 1943 the bataillon was used to form Gebirgsjäger Bataillon 54 which was part of the 1.Gebirgs-Division

Considering his frost bite injuries, he was entitled to the Wound Badge in Black and he also earned the Kriegsverdienst Kreuz 2.Klasse mit Schwerten.
The Wehrpass contains a long and very detailed 'Gefechtskalender' on pages 32,33 and 35. Simon was skilled to use the Karabiner and 3! different leicht Feld Haubitze. He was also a schooled Hilfskrankenträger, Richtkanonier and followed a winter training course.
