The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows signs of wear. The soldier of the tag served in the Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 82. The bataillon was formed in September 1939 in Göttingen as Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 82. This bataillon trained and supplied soldiers for Infanterie-Regiment 82 which was part of the 31.Infanterie-Division. In November 1942 the bataillon was renamed in to Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 82.
The 31.Infanterie-Division was destroyed in the Summer of 1944 in Russia. Remains where used to form a new 31.Grenadier-Division in Latvia. It was renamed into 31.Volks-Grenadier-Division. In October the division had the strength of just a 'Kampfgruppe'. In late Januari 1945 it was moved to Thorn and strengthened before it was put into action. It surrenderred in April 1945 to the Russians.
