The piece shows overall signs of wear. It was reframed at some point. The document was issued in the year 1939 to Maschinenobergefreite Menke who 'received a bonus for special achievements in machine service in the training year 1939'. The document is signed by Korvettenkapitän und Kommandant Zerstörer Gottfried Pönitz.
The Zerstörter Z9 participated in the invasion of Poland from sea on the 3rd of September 1939. In April 1940 it took part of operation Unternehmen Weserübung, invasion of Norway & Denmark. It had the task to, together with 9 other ships, transport 2000 of General Diet's gebirgsjägers to Narvik. They succeeded but all 10 ships were destroyed after the Brits attacked them. The Wolfgang Zenker was so heavily damaged that on the 13th of April it was sunk by its own crew.
The size of the frame is approx. 36cms*30cms.
