The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows signs of wear. The abteilung was formed in August 1939 in Göttingen as Kavallerie-Ersatz-Abteilung 3 and was part of Division 159. In April 1943 the unit changed names from Radfahr-Ersatz-Abteilung 3 to Aufklärungs-Ersatz-Abteilung 3 and became part of Division 409. The Aufklärungs Ersatz und Ausbildungs Abteilung 3 must have been formed later in the war. However no information can be found about this.
In April 1945 this division and her unit where used to form Kampfgruppe Zehler and fought near Kassel. It surrendered to the Western Allies. On the back of the tag the soldier carved in 'A581254 Gefangenen Nr.' so his Pow number.
