The overall condition of all documents is good. Herbert started his carreer in the 7.Batterie Artillerie Regiment 221. This regiment was newly formed in April 1940 and was part of the 221.Infanterie-Division. In the summer of 1942 the III.Abteilung (7-9 batterie) became part of the 454.Sicherungs-Division and saw combat on the Russian front. It fought in areas like Rostow,Mius and Kiew. In late 1943 the abteilung became the II.Abteilung Artillerie Regiment 336 as part of the 336.Infanterie-Division. It was put into action in the Krim. Here the division and her units where destroyed.
The Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2.Klasse was awarded on the 1.September 1942 and is signed by Generalleutnant Hellmuth Koch wearer of the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold.
The Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz was awarded on the 31.May 1944.
The Eiserne Kreuz 2.Klasse was awarded on the 3.June 1944.
