The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows normal signs of wear. The bataillon was formed in Augustus 1939 in Holzminden. It fell under Division 171. It trained and delivered soldiers for 16 different Pionier Bataillons. In April 1945 the Ersatz Bataillon was mobilized, by then as Pionier Aubildungs Bataillon 4 with 5 kompanies.
The 'A' on both parts of the tag stands for the bloodtype of the soldier.
