The document shows overall signs of wear. The Infanterie Sturmabzeicehn in silver was awarded on 01 October 1941. Walter served in the 5.Kompanie Infanterie Regiments 261. This regiment was formed in December 1940 and was part of the 113.Infanterie-Division. With this division the regiment saw combat during the invasion of Russia in 1941 in areas like, Kiew,Charkow, Donbogen and Stalingrad where it was almost completely destroyed. It was rebuild again in March 1943 in France. The regiment was later renamed in Regimentsgruppe 261.
