The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows signs of wear. The soldier of the tag served in the 4.MG.Kompanie Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 317. The bataillon was formed in September 1939 in Köln. This bataillon trained and supplied soldiers for Infanterie Regiment 317 which was part of the 211.Infanterie-Division. This division was also known as Sperrgruppe Eckhardt. It saw combat during the invasion of Belgium and France. In 1942 it moved to Brjansk and after that it saw combat in Demjansk, Newel, Witebsk and Narew. In November 1944 the division was renamed into 211.Volks-Grenadier-Division and saw combat in Hungary. In May 1945 parts of the division surrendered to the Russians and other parts to the Americans. The 'A' on both parts of the tag (front and back) stands for the bloodtype of the soldier.
