Nice worn dog tag from a soldier who served in the 4.Kompanie Pionier Ersatz Bataillon 253.
The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows normal signs of wear. This bataillon was formed in August 1939 in Köln-Westhoven with 3 companies. In Januari 1941 a 4th company was added and the 2.Kompanie Pionier Ersatz Bataillon 211 was used for this. The bataillon trained and supplied 8 different Pionier Bataillons (147,160,195,211,233,253,254 and 385).
Besides this the Ersatz Bataillon itself has also an interesting combat history. In September it was mobilized in the Eifel area as part of the 526.Infanterie-Division. It fought fiercly a the Hurtgen forest battles. In December 1944 the bataillon was renamed into Heeres Pionier Bataillon 755 and saw action during the Ardennes Campaign.
The 'O' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype. His bloodtype was also added by himself.
