Nice zinc dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' in used, but very good condition.
The tag shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who was drafted in the 4.Kompanie Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 238 (The 4.Kompanie was an M.G.Kompanie). This bataillon was formed in August 1939 in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. It trained and supplied soldiers for Infanterie Regiment 238 which was part of the 78.Infanterie-Division. It saw its first combat during Operation Barbarossa.
The bataillon was renamed into Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 238 in November 1942. This tell us that the erkennungsmarke was produced before this date.
The 'O' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
