The document shows overall normal signs of wear. The Infanterie Sturmabzeichen was awarded on 11 September 1944. Walter served in the 4.(MG) Kompanie Grenadier Regiment 386. This regiment was formed in August 1939 and was part of the 218.Infanterie-Division. With this division the regiment saw combat during the Westfeldzug, invasion of France (Elsass).
In March 1941 the division and her units was used as occupation force in Denmark. In Januari 1942 the division was moved to Russia to fight in the Cholm area. Later in the war is fought in areas like Opotschka, Livland, Walk, Oesel and Kurland.
