The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows normal signs of wear. Bau Bataillon 221 was formed from RAD members in August 1939. The bataillon saw its first action during the invasion of Russia as part of Heeresgruppe Süd under the command of the 17.Armee. At the beginning of 1942 the bataillon was reinforced with prisoners of war and was renamed into Bau-Bataillon (K) 221 (K=Kriegsgefangenen). In the summer of 1942 the bataillon was part of the 1.Panzerarmee.
The bataillon was renamed into Baupionier Bataillon 221 in 1943.
