Nice worn dog tag from a soldier who served in the 4.Kompanie Bau-Bataillon 16.
The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows normal signs of wear. Bau Bataillon 16 was formed from RAD members in August 1939. The bataillon saw its first action during the invasion of Poland in September 1939 as part of the 14.Armee. In May 1940 it participated in the invasion of France as part of the 16.Armee and later, in June, it participated in the invasion of Russia as part of the Heeresgruppe Sud.
At the beginning of 1942 the bataillon was reinforced with prisoners of war and was renamed into Bau-Bataillon (K) 16 (K=Kriegsgefangenen). The bataillon was renamed into Bau-Pionier-Bataillon 16 in 1943. In the summer of 1943 the bataillon was destroyed in Southern Ukraine.
The layout of the tag is hard to find. 'Deutsches Reichsheer' is usually on the back and most of the times these Deutsches Reichsheer tags are made out of zinc.
This tag is published in the book 'Deutsche Erkennungsmarken' by Jean Höidal (page 101).
