Nice zinc Wehrmacht MG-Kompanie related tag in used condition.
The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who was drafted in the 4.M.G. Kompanie Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 474. The bataillon was formed in August 1939 in Herford. It trained and supplied soldiers for Infanterie Regiment 474 which was part of the 254.Infanterie-Division. This division saw its first combat during the invasion Holland, Belgium and then France. In June 1941 the division participated in Operation Barbarossa and saw combat in areas like Riga, Leningrad,Wolchow, Demjansk and Karpaten.
The Ersatz Bataillon 474 moved to Belgium in Juli 1940, Vielsalm. In October 1942 the bataillon was stationed in Bastogne. The Ersatz Bataillon was disbanned in late 1944.
