Nice zinc Wehrmacht Maschinengewehr related dog tag in used, but good condition.
The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served/was drafted in the 4.M.G.Kompanie Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 398. This bataillon was formed in early September 1939 in Goslar. It trained and supplied soldiers for Infanterie Regiment 398 which was part of the 216.Infanterie-Division.
This division, and her units, saw its first combat during the invasion of Belgium and France. From December 1941 on it also participated in the fighting in Russia. It fought in areas like Brjansk, Rshew, Orel and Gomel.
In November 1942 the bataillon was renamed into Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 398 and in March 1945 it was mobilized as part of Ersatz Regiment 571.
The 'A' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
