Nice worn dog tag from a soldier who served in the 4.MG Ersatz Kompanie 396.
The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows signs of wear. The 4 MG Ersatz Kompanie 396 was part of Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 396. This bataillon started as Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 396 and was renamed Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 396 in November 1942. It trained and supplied soldiers for Grenadier Regiment 396 which was part of the 216.Infanterie-Division. This division was active on the eastern front. It fought in areas like Brjansk, Rshew, Orel and Gomel.
In March 1945 the ersatz bataillon came into action as part of Grenadier Ersatz Regiment 571 (Division Nr.466) and moved to the Western front to the Bocholt-Dorsten area (near the Dutch border) and fought against the British. In late March 1945 it moved back east to Driburg.
The 'O' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
