The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served within the 2.Kompanie MG-Bataillon 1 (Maschinengewehr Bataillon 1). This unit was formed mid October 1935 in Dortmund. The bataillon saw its first action during the Western Campaign.
In August 1940 the bataillon was used to form Kradschützen Bataillon 16 which was part of the 16.Panzer-Division. With this divison the bataillon moved to Rumania as Lehrtruppe, but in June 1941 it participated in the Balkanfeldzug. From June 1941 on it fought on the Russian front. In the summer of 1941 the bataillon was merged with Panzer Aufklärungs Abteilung 16. It participated in battle for Stalingrad and was destroyed in January 1943 in that area. A new abteilung was formed in March 1943.
The 'A' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
