The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served in the 1.Kompanie Landesschützen Bataillon 497. This unit was formed in January 1941 from the II.Bataillon Infanterie Regiment 660. It operated in Stade the entire war. In 1945 it operated under the command of Kommandeur der Kriegsgefangenen X.
The Landesschützen units had as main task to guard prisoner of war camps, fighting partisans and were used as occupation force. Later during the war they often became Sicherungs units.
The 'A' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
