Very nice Wehrmacht artilleri related tag in used, but very good condition.
The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served within the 2.batterie Artillerie Regiment 408. This regiment was formed in August 1939 as schwere Artillerie Abteilung 408 and saw its first combat during the invasion of the low countries in May 1940. After the French campaign the abteilung stayed in France and the 2.Batterie was stationed in Heuqueville as part of the Küstenschutz (coastal defence).
In April 1941 the 2.batterie received their tropical equipment and short after they were shipped, from Napels, to Tripoli. It operated in Afrika and participated is some important battles. Som every detailed information can be found online and is worth a read.
At the end of March 1942 the abteilung became part of the 90.leichten-Division. In October 1942 the unit was disbanned and the remnants were used to form the III.Bataillon Afrika Artillerie Regiment 1. The 2.batterie became the 5.batterie Afrika Artillerie Regiment 1. This regiment was part of Panzerarmee Afrika.
What makes this tag special is that it says Artillerie Regiment, however every scource on the net is talking about Abteilung 408. Except for 1 document. See the last picture. Its a death notice of an Unteroffizier named Johann Silbernagel who served in the Stabskompanie Artillerie Regiment 408! His erkennungsmarke also reads 'Stab.A.R.408'. (Note; we don't own that card!!) So the abteilung must switched to a regiment at some point.
The 4! 'B' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
