Very nice aluminium dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' in very good condition from a soldier who served in the 11.Kompanie Infanterie Regiment 173.
The dog tag shows normal signs of wear. The regiment was formed in August 1939 as part of 87.Infanterie-Division. The division and her units saw the first combat during the invasion of Belgium and then France in the Spring of 1940. It stayed in France and in October 1940 the III.Bataillon (9-14.Kompanie) was used to form the I.Bataillon Infanterie Regiment 582. This regiment was part the 319.Infanterie-Division.
This division, and her units, where the occupation force on the 3 Channel Islands Jersey, Guernsey und Sark where it stayed until the end of the war. Infanterie Regiment 582 was stationed on the Island of Jersey.
A new III.Bataillon of Infanterie Regiment 173 was formed the same month (october 1940). In June 1941 the regiment was put into action in Russia and fought in areas like Bialystok, Smolensk, Gshatsk and Rshew. Because of heavy losses the III.Bataillon of the regiment was disbanned in early January 1942.
The 'B' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
