The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served within the 10.Kompanie Infanterie Regiment 211. This regiment was formed in late August 1939 and was part of the 71.Infanterie-Division. As part of this division the regiment saw its first combat during the invasion of Belgium and France in May 1940. A lot of very detailed information about the regiment fighting in this campaign and the Russian campaign has been logged.
After the Western campaign the regiment moved to the east in April 1941 to prepare for the invasion of Russia that took place in June 1941. In Russia it fought in areas like Premysl and Kiew and in 1942, after restrenghtening in Belgium/France, it fought in areas like Charkow, Donbogen and Stalingrad.
In October 1942 the regiment was renamed into Grenadier Regiment 211. It still fought in the Stalingrad area during this time and was destroyed during the encirclement of Stalingrad in January 1943. The regiment was rebuild in March 1943 in Denmark by using Grenadier Regiment 855. In August 1943 the regiment (again part of the 71.Inf.-Div.) was send to Italy to fight in areas like Triest, Monte Cassino and Adria.
Very nice tag with a very rich history.
The 'O' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
